Moxie's FreewayBlogs :

Yes, I realize that I live in New Jersey and therefor it should be "HighwayBlogs", but I'm sticking with the term developed by Scarlet Pimpernel over at www.freewayblogger.com. Scarlet P. has a fantastic archive of past freewayblogs and gives you lots of information on how to do it.

IS THIS LEGAL?

According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, it most certainly is! I called them to say I had seen several banners on overpasses of Route 80 welcoming home soldiers from Iraq (which is totally true - I see them most on the overpass heading westbound right before the Route 53 Exit). I asked if there were any rules or restrictions if I wanted to put something up myself. The woman I spoke with informed me that if I wanted to hang something on the OUTSIDE of the fencing, I would need a permit and include the method whith which I would secure the banner so it does not fly off and cause an accident. If I wanted to hang something on the INSIDE of the fencing, that would not require a permit, but she suggested I make sure to secure it appropriately so it's not a problem for the overpass' traffic.

NOW ON TO THE PHOTOS...

Here are the signs from below hung up on the Route 202 overpass of Route 80. It's the perfect spot for signs, because that area gets all backed up because of people taking the Route 287 exit. Unfortunately, the other two signs were hard to take pictures of because I have an old digital camera. I know what to ask for for my birthday next month...

These were my second attempt at freewayblogging, using an overhead projector. For these I used presentation boards that were already colored white. I printed out some sayings on transparencies and traced the letters on the boards - then filled them in afterwards. I took the advice of a comment made after my first attempt and reinforced the corners of the cardboard with duct tape, then poked holes in the tape to slip an 8" zip tie through. I'll let you know how it goes after I post these up tonight, but I expect it to be a lot easier with zip ties.

This is my first freewayblog. It was done on an unfolded Staples self-locking box with black and red Sharpie markers. I did not have an overhead projector at the time so I tried using a ruler to make the letters and just hand-wrote the numbers. I secured it with 2 strips of duct tape running across the back of the cardboard and twisting the tape through the fencing. It came out kind of lame, but I am happy I got off my dead ass, made it, and went out at 11:30pm when it was snowing to put it up.
