Bill Moyer's Journal - Watch or Record It
This Wednesday at 9pm EST until 10:30pm, PBS will air an episode of Bill Moyer's Journal entitled "Buying The War" - if you watch Lost, they will be repeating the episode on 4/28 at 1:30pm and 5/1 at 3:30am.
It will discuss the media coverage of the war in Iraq, and contains interviews... the buzz I hear is that it's excellent, and will make you not want to ever watch TV for your news again.

Blast from the Past: Moyers Ordered Dirt on Goldwater Staffers

As always, MG, I am glad to see you are still here and going strong. Thanks for all your work.
Having lived in Japan and China, and spent a lot of time in Europe, I have become ambivalent about the right to bear arms. Crazy people do attack in schools in Japan and China, but their victims are fewer, and their woulds are from knives or clubs. The argument should not be about the insane person, but about the ease of obtaining guns.
And thanks for the posts about casualties in Iraq. When I returned from Vietnam, I wanted every parent, and every child, to see what the wounded and dead look like; I wanted it on the front page of every paper. Later, when my child was still small, I worried how much it would hurt him to see that carnage, but I did describe it to him. Now his friends have died in Iraq, and he has no illusions about the costs of war.
We need a national discussion of these things, the violence as acceptable action within our culture. If the leadership of the country, and the media, all agree that the way to remove a problem acquaintance is immediate warfare, then why shouldn't the young view guns as a necessary tool for school attendance?
As you can see from my thoughts, you are preaching to the choir with me, but I am recommending your blog to everyone I possibly can.
With a mother like you, your daughter will certainly gain the tools she needs to function in whatever kind of world she inherits.
Take care,
lsr.
Mox, I've been looking forward to the Bill Moyers special too, but I wish it could have been scheduled for any time-slot but Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. It's going to be ignored by almost all viewers in favor of the American Wannabes results show, and that's a real shame.
Moyers is one of the few that tell it like it is.
The problem is will it get the proper coverage it deserves?

people still watch tv for their news? REALLY? it's gotten SO bad for me that in the AM i watch "saved by the bell" and "the nanny" rather than the network "news" or "news shows", and in the PM, i watch "the daily show."
and in the car: it's the bbc worldservice in the am. news always sounds better with a british accent, plus it doesn't have the american spin. true, it has OTHER spin, but at least it's different, and actually NEWS.
Yes, it's a shame but true that in order to get something resembling factual news one has to look outside America. American mainstream media has about the level of credibility of, well, the U.S. military.
In 2000 I told people that if Bush was elected, we would be in a war within 2 years. When he ran for the presidency, he claimed the economy was going into a recession. What's the best way to deal with that? Divert attention from domestic problems and go adventuring overseas.
I would like PBS to do an hour or two showing how the military industrial complex has made out thanks to the war. That's what is driving our economy and the war won't stop until enough people say enough is enough. People should read M.G. Butler's article on war profiteering during WWI. Same applies today.
As to the news media, the so called Liberals have succumbed to the right wing fear mongering machine, led by the FOX network. This is the Ministry of Propaganda for the Republican Party. People forget that it was Hitler who said that a lie repeated often enough, becomes the truth. That is what happen in the prelude to war.
I am an independent voter and have served almost 30 years in the military, lest you think I am some left wing nut. Great job, Bill.

You are absolutely correct. It is a sickening thing to watch, the Democrats being basically "Republican-lite". A central problem of theirs is their propensity to let the other side of the aisle dictate the terms of their arguments. If they keep buying into or pretending to buy into the Republican myths about the "war on terrorism" actually being about terrorism and not resource domination then they will constantly be playing a game where the Rethugs are the ones making the rules. I'd love to see at least one of them have guts enough to stand up and say "Your 'war on terror' is an artificial construct; it's phony, and is not about fighting "terrorism", but about oil and natural gas exploration, extraction and transport to market. Look at the theatres in the so-called 'war on terrorism' and you will see how each is connected to the larger effort at resource domination. So fuck you and fuck your phony 'war on terror'". But they won't say it. They are all mainstream puppets. That's the problem with American politics, it is nothing more than a power struggle between two slightly-different factions of the elite, the bourgeoisie. Neither gives a damn about the average worker. They are limousine conservatives and limousine liberals, every last one. Even Kucinich is a sellout. Neither wants to really change much about the status quo. The Republicans are neo-fascists and the Democrats are spineless enablers for the neo-fascists. American politics needs an enema.
Case in point: Today at the signing ceremony for the appropriations bill with withdrawl timetable. Nancy "impeachment is off the table" Pelosi and Harry "I can dance and I can fight but I'd rather dance" Reid both made a point of saying "we need to get out of Iraq so we can focus on the fight against terrorism". Nevermind the fact that the "war on terror" is a fucking fake, that anyone with a wall map and a search engine can put the pieces together in an afternoon. Let's just keep the myth going of a "war on terror", as everyone knows the sky would fall and the earth would open up and swallow us if we diverged from the Republican myths about it. They make me sick. They don't serve the will of the people, they never did. They serve the will of the bourgeoisie, just approaching their tasks from a slightly different perspective than their neo-fascist "opponants" on the other side of the aisle. If this was a more intelligent, well-read, educated country phonies like those two would be horsewhipped.
