Bush: No need to worry about port security
President Bush on Thursday defended his administration's decision to allow a company from an Arab country to operate six major U.S. ports, saying, "People don't need to worry about security."
"This deal wouldn't go forward if we were concerned about the security for the United States of America," Bush told reporters during a Cabinet meeting. He emphasized that "port security will be run by U.S. customs and the U.S. Coast Guard."
Telling people not to be concerned about security runs contrary to everything this administration has been saying since 9/11. From the beginning, it's been "stay aware of your surroundings," "report anything suspicious" (hell, I even called the cops when I found myself sharing the highway with a non-descript grey van that didn't have license plates), and "watch the terror alerts" (ooh the pretty colors!).
Why should we take them at their word that this is all on the up-and-up? Why should we trust that this doesn't impact our national security? And why shouldn't those who already question the Bush administration raise questions?
PS: Remember those family empire ties I mentioned Bush has to wealthy families in the Middle East? Lou Dobbs will lay it out for ya in relation to this new deal.
PPS: I just caught this over at AmericaBlog...
This is rich. It proves one more time that the Bush people will lie about everything. Bush has spent the past five years making Americans paranoid for purely political reasons. Now, apparently, if Americans do worry about national security, they are aiding the enemy according to our Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England:
If the furor over the port deal should go on, Mr. England said, it would give enemies of the United States aid and comfort: "They want us to become distrustful, they want us to become paranoid and isolationist."
IF THIS DEAL DOESN'T GO THROUGH, YOU'RE AIDING THE TERRORISTS! For fuck's sake, people, this is past comical!!!

Just at the moment, I think we should be considering possible reasons behind the administation allowing (nay, insisting upon) this company not keeping records on American soil. I believe this is the trail to follow.
These records, among other things, include shipping manifests. Think about that.
Is Bush:
a)Understanding that one day a WMD will eventually get into the US and he doesn't want anyone to track that it came through his UAE buddies' ports?
b)Getting shipping container-sized loads of a white powdery substance he doesn't want anyone to find out about?
c)Secretly shipping the missing black people from Katrina back to Africa?
Or...?
Moxie: "IF THIS DEAL DOESN'T GO THROUGH, YOU'RE AIDING THE TERRORISTS! For fuck's sake, people, this is past comical!!!"
It's comical, yet I'm not not laughing. When you hear the same joke over and over again, it loses its value in humor.
I must be a terrorist, Mox. I think for myself too much and don't fall for the White House storylines anymore. I shake my head in disgust as the people who support this Preznit bleet like the sheep in Animal Farm to agree with anything that falls out of his mouth. Are they afraid of admitting they made a mistake in voting for him? It's not that hard - you just do it and move on. I voted for Norm Coleman - idiot that I am - and I use that experience to remind myself of exactly what can happen when you trust a scorpion not to sting you.
I realize that I'm babbling...pay me no mind. I just don't understand it; what will it take for people to take a deep breath, look at the state of the world and say, "Hey, that Bush guy is a pretty awful president... we should take steps to get rid of him." I'm not asking for anyone to change parties or to forego their deeply held party politics. I'm just asking that they use the common sense that the deity of their choice gave them and look at the man for what he is: A total failure.
I know this is off-topic but I'm a little too steamed at the moment... so The Psychotic Patriot is blogging the incredibly stupid and heartlessly timed removal of a mother's memorial to her fallen son, and it wasn't vandalism. It happened just before Bush visited the area. Please pass this around, and if you blog, please post about this travesty.

So let's get this straight . . . if we say that security doesn't trump the law & Constitution and don't feel that "national security" allows the DoJ to conduct warrentless wiretaps, arrests without charges & trials, and indefinite detentions of US citizens, then we're "aiding the terrorists". But if we support making security the top concern, and want security to be the #1 priority over business deals & corporate politics, then we're also "aiding the terrorists". Well shoot. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
