Bush Getting Ornery Over The Port Issue
You can't convince me that he's not closely connected to the Arab world. If you watched Fahrenheit 9/11, even with the most critical eye, you cannot deny that there are ties between the Bush family to very wealthy Arab families.
But wait! We're supposed to be ever vigilant regarding our national security, which would include protecting our ports - where overseas shipments enter the country! One can reasonably presume that a company purchased by those from Arab nations doing business in our ports would raise some sort of, I dunno, MAUVE flag at least?
Bush doesn't see it that way. He plans on vetoing - the first time he will have done so since taking office - any attempt to put a stop (even if it's just to take a good look at it all and make sure it's copacetic). Seems he wants it both ways.
How does this all sit with you?

Just to be clear, what's the threat here? Union workers will still run the docks, Coast Guard will still control security. This just seems like a political issue of the worst kind.
Well, you're right. If terrorists wanted to do something bad to our ports, nothing is stopping them from doing so now.
But, putting port security in the hands of a company controlled by a country with unsettling ties to terrorism probably isn't doing anything to make us safer from terrorism.
Is this company the best possible company to handle our security? That seems to be the question, a very relevant question, and I'm not sure the answer is yes.
Children, THIS is the Dems golden oppertunity to drive a wooden stake into the warm-n-fuzzy "Big Daddy is making us safer" beast.
Bush has no, zero, zip, nada way to spin this to look good. The single argument he can raise (and it has been) is "Y'all is Islamophobes!" Oh yeah? Well YOU made us that way, puddin'.
Toby Keith ain't gonna cut no song about the fairness and wisdom of UAE-controlled ports. Bush smirked as hatred and suspicion was force-fed into the yokels. Now they're puking it back up on him and he's gonna throw a hissy.
The real story here is why does he want this so badly? What dirty deal did he make and to whom as a condition of this coming to pass? There's a major stench here. Mixed signals from on high. Rumsfeld says this is all news to him, even though he supposedly was on a committee necessary to approve it.
If only we had the investigative MSM of 30 years ago. *sigh*
I don't have an educated opinon as of yet about whether or not the deal to the UAE should be allowed to run it's course. What I think is an issue here though, is that the administration has again tried to push a deal of seemingly huge consequence through with no consoltation or, it seems, even a headsup, to the congress. Bush threatening a veto at this time is bluster and bullshit. The guy needs to calm down and be a team player for once. He might try expecting the congress to do it's job instead of trying to stop them from doing their job. Maybe even try not stonewalling them for once. If what Bush says about the deal being safe and well thought out is true, then why not let congress see that for themselves without treating them like the enemy. The people have three branches of government, (yeah, I know, the Attorney General thinks there are only two but, he's wrong). It would be preferable if all three branches would see fit and be allowed/encouraged to take part in conducting the people's business. This shit with the naked emperor trying to run the whole show is really fucking things up for us.
I watched and listened to a Republican congressman on CNN. Sorry, I've forgotten who it was. He was complaining about the congress not being consulted by the adminstration about this sale to the UAE. While that is a legitimate concern and complaint for Congress to voice it comes off as disingenous since they - the Republican majority in particular, and also the cowardly Democratic monority - have let the Bush administration slide time and again on other issues without nery a peep. The latest and still current battle they have failed to or neglected to fight is the NSA spying, sans oversight, battle.

Sorry about the double post, dangit.
The politics is in the eye of the beholder, now isn't it. Safety as well, really.
I would have felt much better both about the econmic as well as domestic saftey aspects if they gave this contract to some American company, wouldn't you? Do you think there were competing bids for this gig? Doubt it. Why the Shrubster want it so bad is another spurious component of this whole charade.
Does anyone else detect the irony here? Two issues: One, they want to spy on all international calls to possible terrorist activists. Second, they are in favor of sponsoring a deal that may make them need to monitor more calls rather than less? Or, is that part of the capitalistic profiteering game they are going to play here.
NEWSFLASH: THIS JUST IN...
Bush said to reporters: "I am trying to conduct foreign policy now by saying to the people of the world, `We'll treat you fairly.'"
In a related story, the people of the world laughed, then soberly shuddered.
Back in the US, a State Department official announced "The President has not ruled out the use of force in treating people fairly."
Veto....?
Hmmmm.....
Looks like someone is trying his hand at dictatorial leadership now.
I can agree that this may or may not weaken your national security; but considering what has been going on with the USA/Mexico border - it is just a matter of time before the neocon(zi's) allow for a (uh-oh)WMD to be used on your soil.
Awhile back, I made an offer to watch the destruction of the world over a cold beer with any of you up here in Canada - my offer still stands, because after watching that documentary 'loose change', and all the other readings I have done over the past 5 years; this is a recipe for a POTENTIAL disaster.
Had to capitalize 'potential' because maybe thousands of people including myself are wrong; but Bush is no good for the global state of peace (what relative peace there was pre-911), and definitely no good for stability around the world.
He has sold out your country, and fed lies upon lies with the help of his regime-style administration with the likes of Cheney & Rummy; and at least 3,000 (plus 1 persons - the late great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson) were murdered for the benefit of political control, and slow dismantling of your constitution.
911 = reichstag fires!
If anyone else has listened to the last interview Thompson ever gave with the BBC radio, it lends credibility to the notion he was executed, not killed by suicide. He stumbled upon evidence that has not yet come to light, which gave him reason to fear for his own safety. Keep in mind his wife heard a 'click', followed by a thud. All while his son was upstairs....odd I think.
He was one of the last great investigative journalists out there who had a pair of balls, and wasn't afraid of revealing the truth.
Again - here's hoping for the best...and if not, there are friends up north here with cold brews awaiting.
Port security is not now, nor will it be in the future, under the control of private enterprise.
Should we stop forign investment in the United States? The left doesn't want the government to infringe on rights, but they want the government to decide who owns property?
I don't know anything about this deal, but unless there is a compelling national interest, the government needs to butt out.
Robert, just a few suggestions, because you're not even close to understanding what is going on with this issue. Trying to knock around 'the left' on what has transpired thus far with this issue ain't going to cut it. You're totally out to lunch. Get up to speed just the least little bit about what has so far gone on before you dive in with trying to make it a left/right thing. If you'd prefer to blather on incoherently about what you think this is all about then that is your choice...of course. But, before you do, keep in mind, for starters, that the the Republican leadership is all up in arms about this.
You know why I'm so skeptical about this story? Becuase the first time I heard about it was on The Savage Nation a few weeks ago before anyone, even the bloggers, had picked it up. Now this guy's out to lunch on just about everything, and if he's the one who led the battle cry on this, I'd say the emperor has no clothes.
Has anyone else noticed that our president invaded and destroyed a country that was not involved in 9/11, then sold our ports to a country that WAS?
All Port security should be under the US Goverment.
Who owns what really does not matter.
In the event of an attack, oll bets are off anyway.
Bottom line is I don't trust Arabs, or persons from third world nations.
I myself can not see eye to eye with citizens from a backward Nation that is based on Religion, Camels, goats, and beating women.
Call me a racist, I would rather that the Brits manage it.
The UK we can trust.
(I would even trust Germany or Russia before an Arab Nation)
Maybe this is a ploy for the midterm elections. The reps will know this will not sit well with the public. This will give the reps an opportunity to show they care about security. Vote for me.
Atrocious
ROFLMAO!!!!!
Damn Moxie, You gotta get haloscan so I can give atrocious a couple thumbs up!!
I had some really good statements to make in relation to patriotism and the economy. Dealing mainly with the idea that now is not the time to be outsourcing such a valuable resource as a port. Let me just say that Windspike sums it up really well.
I would say more but Iggy's ignorant racist ass has got me so enraged that if he was standing in front of me they would throw me in jail after I beat his putrid cowardly hide till his own mother wouldn't recognize him. FYI my wife is from one of those non-white muslim countries. Perhaps if you climbed out of your hole and explored the world around you, you would discover that not all Muslims are evil, wife beating, suicide bombing hate filled bigots. I have met far more that are good, decent and honest people.
Sorry Moxie. I don't mean to clog up your blog with such things, but at the moment I'm just beyond myself.
ol Georgie's just back to his ol' games, the fucker...
proof again that he'll do what he wants -- and now that he's got dems and repugs on the same side...
LOOK OUT!
