Another Reason Why I Find Religion Just Plain Silly

Remember Father Mychal Judge?

Father Mychal was giving last rites to a dead man at the World Trade Center, when falling debris killed him. This is how many people will recall him:

As AmericaBlog reflects, he was a beloved member of the community, and he was openly gay and supportive of them.

His church has decided, however, that men like him should no longer to be considered to teach or run seminaries, not to mention disallow gay men from entering the seminary to begin with.

Obviously Father Mychal loved his work, and obviously he was loved FOR his work, judging from the enormous turnout at his funeral three weeks after 9/11. To deny someone like Father Mychal the opportunity to serve his community like he did merely illustrates just how asinine religion can truly be.

Just sayin'.

Organized religion is the most oppressive force on earth. Period.

And Time Magazine has picked Benedict as it's 'person of the year'. I was raised Catholic, but ceased practicing that religion while in Jr. High. The current Pope seems hell-bent on taking the Catholic Church back at least 500 years. His edict regarding gay clergy is a perfect example. And this from a man everyone knows is openly gay. The hypocrisy beggars the imagination.

Religion and spirituality can be postive, but often they're in the wrong hands.

If the Vatican didn't have more money than god, they would be bankrupt in two ways - morally, which they already are, and fiscally.

it's kind of funny that gay men are prohibited from serving in the church, since they're not allowed to have sex anyway. oh, wait, that's right. homosexual = pedophile. now it all makes sense.

Oh, but M, according to the Catholic Church, it's okay for pedophiles to be priests (otherwise why would they defend them so?). It's just homosexuals that aren't allowed.

Organized Religion was the “Government“of the ancient Worlds.
Perhaps this is why it was referred to as the “Dark Ages”
The Catholic Church is exception.
For instance; In 897 Pope Stephen VII had a great disliking for his predecessor Pope Formosus.
5 Months after Pope Formosus' death, Stephen had him dug up and placed him on trial.
He delegated a Deacon to speak on the former Popes behalf.
He ranted on for days with the badly decayed corpse; propped in the witness stand.
I think even in 897's standards they must have considered this insanity.

Have to admit I did like John Paul.
He made a genuine effort to portray his maker.
He was the first Pope to apologize for the hypocrisies of the Church.

BS like this is why I am against organized religion. I can be a very spiritual person without being drawn into the personal petty politics found in many organized religions.

Besides, this whole attack on homosexuals that the new pope has started ignores the fact that pedophile priests have attacked young girls just as often as boys.

Exactly Mulligan. I myself happen to be a spiritual person and have a good relationship with God but I worship from home, haven't been inside a church in years and years. From what I've found, churches tend to be chock full of hypocrites, people who feel like they can be total S.O.B.s for six days out of the week and most of Sunday and think sitting in a particular building for an hour a week makes it all O.K.
