Quick Blog Before Bed

Had my Deviant Behavior class tonight and my head is swimming with angry discussions of our capitalist society and how when it's all boiled down, everyone has/does now/will be out to screw the other guy over to get the deal. Businesses overcharge for goods to make up for pilfering, disaffected employees and/or shoplifters who are angry that they can't afford the overpriced crap that everyone must have to look like they are successful. The best defense against it is to be a better consumer - read all the fine print, price compare, check Consumer Reports for the best valued product. There, I just saved you a three-hour class. Sorry, you can't earn credits, but at least I'm not charging you. See how nice I am?

Oh, and LOST fucking rocked tonight. Woot!

Anyway, here's a roundup of today's fun happenings:

  • Fox Sells Holiday Ornaments, betrays their own people - This after O'SpinZone and Gibson have gotten all tweaky about the fact that corporations don't seem to use "Merry Christmas" in their advertising anymore, but prefer the more all-encompassing "Happy Holidays". Apparently they believe "Happy Holidays" doesn't include Christmas. See? I told you they were fucking morons.
As part of an information offensive in Iraq, the U.S. military is secretly paying Iraqi newspapers to publish stories written by American troops in an effort to burnish the image of the U.S. mission in Iraq.

The articles, written by U.S. military "information operations" troops, are translated into Arabic and placed in Baghdad newspapers with the help of a defense contractor, according to U.S. military officials and documents obtained by the Los Angeles Times.

Many of the articles are presented in the Iraqi press as unbiased news accounts written and reported by independent journalists. The stories trumpet the work of U.S. and Iraqi troops, denounce insurgents and tout U.S.-led efforts to rebuild the country.

G'night everyone!

U.S. Military Covertly Pays to Run Stories in Iraqi Press

...The operation is designed to mask any connection with the U.S. military. The Pentagon has a contract with a small Washington-based firm called Lincoln Group, which helps translate and place the stories. The Lincoln Group's Iraqi staff, or its subcontractors, sometimes pose as freelance reporters or advertising executives when they deliver the stories to Baghdad media outlets...

This is Lincoln Group's Website..

This is exactly the same type of operation as Rendon Group.

This is Rendon Group's website...

We had a good discussion about Rendon Group on the Chris Wallace thread below. As DF pointed out, it all smells of Operation Mockingbird.

How many other "groups" are there?

Likr the article says, when you add this crap to the infomercials presented as news and the journalist propaganda payola they did domestically, especially knowing the Rendon, chalabi, miller BS that led us into this war in the first place. I'll bet Fauxnews gets pentagon money too.
Who knows what is true or whats bullshit.
What they have been doing has to be against the law.

Here's a couple cool news sites that often have stories that don't ever make it into the msm....

It probably IS against the law, and regardless, government paid propaganda being passed off as news is nothing a free country's government would consider, showing how low they've sunk. Just when we think they can't get any lower, they plumb new depths. It also shows that they have no confidence in their "message" and realize that the truth won't sell their policies or else they wouldn't have to resort to buying propaganda.

Considering the Bush admin has been caught more than once passing off their propaganda as news reports right here in the US, paying journalists to support their policies while pretending it's an unbiased news report, etc. is anyone really surprised that they'd do this in Iraq?

In 1985 memo, Alito advocated Roe overturn - the Smoking Gun is there.

I love the smoking gun reference there--implies murder. But why don't you make it more appropriate to the story, say, the smoking vaccum? I know, that's catechrisis and all, but irresistable.

Abortion, is a private medical issue.
Government should not be addressing it all.
It is not a constitutional issue and should be considered a right, for ethier side.

Ever hear of NPR? Bill Moyers? Any of this getting through?

Iggy Dude,
I do believe that women should have the right to get an abortion, at least early in pregnancy. What's beautiful about abortion, though, is that it kills millions of potential Democrats, and they're the ones fighting for it! Never has any group supported genocide of its own, but we all know that liberalism is suicide one way or another. Whether by emptiness, or by surrender, or by Hoover, their own mores are their ultimate undoing.

NPR Government paid propaganda???
You should lay off the koolaid.

Is public broadcasting a nest of left-wing biases? Ken Tomlinson of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which funds public television and radio, was so concerned about the alleged leftward drift of programs on National Public Radio and the Public Broadcasting Service that the CPB chairman persuaded his agency to hire not one but two ombudsmen to review and critique NPR and PBS news segments.

So what kind of slanted reporting have Ken Bode and William Schulz uncovered since they began work three months ago?

As it turns out, not much. Actually, as it turns out, none at all....

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/11/AR2005071101573_pf.html

Both studies paid for by Tomlinson to prove PBS Bias found NONE AT ALL!!!

And why was Kenny boy run out of PBS? Because he was trying to force a right wing bias on CPB...

Kenneth Tomlinson Quits Public Broadcasting Board

It's pretty sad when the right wing thinks the biggest liar in all of the media Bill O'Reilly is no spin, and the proven unbiased truth is somehow left-leaning.

I see your point e-dog.
But it is not a right.
Government should no care ethier way.
Hell I personally would get the Government out of a lot of choices, like legalize drugs across the board.
They had drugs back in George's day.
They did not make laws.
The FDA should be booted too. Who are they to tell a person dying of cancer they cannot choose their own treatment, or smoke weed?
If I was dying I'd say Fuck them.

BTW
ALL Propganda is paid for by some means.
Good guys or bad guys; who works for free?
you'd better lay off the Koolaid.

Though Iggy Dude and myself are usually at loggerheads on most issues, on these two matters [abortion and legalaization of drugs across the board] I must wholeheartedly agree with him, especially on legalization of all drugs. If someone is old enough to be considered legally an adult then using drugs or not using them is their own personal choice, certainly no matter for government involvement beyond a normal regulatory function like with alcohol [itself a drug, one that causes far more death and destruction each year than all "illegal" drugs combined!]. It is an adult's choice what they do in the privacy of their own home so long as they are violating no-one else's civil liberties. Should driving a car while on acid be illegal? Sure, just like driving drunk is, because at that point someone is violating others' rights by endangering fellow motorists. Should possession of drugs or sitting in the privacy of your home and tripping on acid [or smoking herb, or shooting up et cetera] be illegal? Of course not, the very thought of it is ridiculous, especially for a nation that proclaims itself to be a "free country". The prohibition of drugs causes vastly more harm each year than the drugs themselves could ever do. Millions of otherwise law-abiding citizens' lives are ruined needlessly and it fills the prisons with non-violent "offenders", overcrowding the prisons which has the perverse effect of forcing REAL criminals like murderers, rapists, child molesters etc. to be furloughed so they can go out and murder and rape some more. Prohibition of drugs is literally insane.

As for the government paid-for propaganda issue however I couldn't disagree with Iggy more. Nobody is saying they shouldn't be able to put up propaganda posters [that state who paid for them] that are trying to influence opinion, or have an article in a newspaper that tries to make a point while having at the end of it a disclaimer saying "Paid for by the U.S. Dept. of Defense". The problem is when they are writing articles for what is supposed to be an "independent" Iraqi press and they are published with the instructions made to the newspaper publishers that nobody mentions where the articles came from, so as to be passed off as real news. If they think that putting the real authorship of the articles on them would hurt their "credibility", they're correct, it would, because it shows it to be propaganda and would likely be discounted by the vast majority of Iraqi readers. But by not claiming authorship of it and trying to pass it off as being written by independent Iraqi journalists, this is dead wrong. There's a big difference, and certainly they're proving they have little confidence in their own credibility by trying to make it look like others wrote it. Plus, when the truth comes out [like it did and usually does], it makes them look even MORE untrustworthy and downright desperate, sort of like Kirk when he writes in anonymously to agree with himself [which is why I call him Kirkanonymous] but on a larger scale and with more important consequences.
