Cunningham Cries, DeLay Defends

I've accepted an internship with a huge law firm, which means my blogging time will get cut down even further. If nothing else, I will try to post up the bigger stuff of the day and let everyone discuss.

To that end, this was what I found rather foul today... First that Rep. "Duke" Cunningham was reduced to tears while resigning and admitting he took $2.4 mil in bribes. Yeah, I guess I'd cry too if I got caught.

Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, an eight-term congressman and hotshot Vietnam War fighter jock, pleaded guilty to graft and tearfully resigned Monday, admitting he took $2.4 million in bribes mostly from defense contractors in exchange for government business and other favors.

"The truth is I broke the law, concealed my conduct, and disgraced my office," the 63-year-old Republican said at a news conference. "I know that I will forfeit my freedom, my reputation, my worldly possessions, most importantly, the trust of my friends and family."

He could get up to 10 years in prison at sentencing Feb. 27 on federal charges of conspiracy to commit bribery and fraud, and tax evasion.

Yep, cry me a river.

The second thing that I found both laughable and sad at the same time was that Tom DeLay - BASTION OF GOOD MORALS AND ETHICS - came to his fellow slime's defense.

House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) yesterday defended Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-Calif.) after calls from congressional Democrats to investigate the Republican appropriator for selling his San Diego home to a defense contractor whose firm had received $65 million in federal funds in 2004.

“Duke Cunningham is a hero,” DeLay said during a press briefing Tuesday. “He is an honorable man of high integrity.”

An honorable man with high integrity that just resigned in disgrace and shame, you fucktard.

In addition to monetary bribes Cunningham also got some pricey antiques, including [try not to laugh] a 19th Century antique toilet. It was mentioned in the Washington Post article today.

They only show remorse when they're caught. The republican-neocon-"conservative" party is founded on a culture of corruption, and thrives within it.

Moxie, congrats on the internship.

DF, that's a 19th cent "commode". Which is a term used to describe a short bedside piece of furniture such as a dresser. Before indoor plumbing a chamber pot was contained in the commode for use during the night.

It's always amusing when the words of an idiot come back and bite him in the ass.

Congratulations on your internship. You'll do very well.

Oh yeah, duh me - said June right there in the article. Hehe, I claim lack of sleep as the culprit.

But yes, DeLay is still an asshat. He didn't want to investigate his friend of high integrity.

I think this is one we will disagree on slightly, Mox. What Duke Cunningham did was wrong, and he deserves the punishment he gets, but I think he deserves at least a little respect for pleading guilty, resigning, and actually accepting responsibility for what he did.

How many times have people here and elsewhere said they wish bush would just once admit to making a mistake? If bush, cheney, or any other members of this administration actually got caught, you know they would fight it with every tool their abuse of power gave them. Did libby give a tear-stained I-did-it speech? If more neo-cons had the nads to accept responsibility for their actions like Cunningham did, we would be in a lot better shape as a country than we are today.

I'll give him props for admitting it, but I hate when people bawl like babies for the cameras because they got caught being crooks. I find it insincere and a cheap, dramatic attempt to garner sympathy.

Drama queens piss me off.

to Gordon:

You are correct; the Washington Post today clarified what it meant, saying it was a "19th Century commode" meaning chest of drawers, wheras yesterday, when they had no photo of it and just said a 19th Century commode, [as I am no antique officianado, I had only heard the word "commode" in reference to a toilet/chamber pot, I presumed they meant just that], so yes, today they are clarifying it by saying it was a chest of drawers.

All I did was read the transcript, so I couldn't even guess if the tears were real or not. Even if they were, there should be the potential for an olive branch here, asking republicans to show this kind of responsibility, and democrats to offer, if not compassion, at least a chance for reconciliation.

I bet Cunningham wishes his biggest problem now was if he had accidentally taken a dump in a chest of drawers based on its deceptive name.

Now about this sleep deprivation thing, we'll need to find a way for you to either get used to it or overcome it because we need us our MoxieGrrrl!
