BOO, OCEAN COUNTY!

I admit it, sometimes I can be a North Jersey Snob.

For those of you who are unaware, there is an unspoken rivalry between the north, central and south parts of New Jersey. I even know this one hosebeast who openly dispises us Northern Jersey folk and prefers her Piney ways. God she's such a bitch. No, you have no idea what a bitch she is. I typically reserve my spite for the blog, but this one I am actually cold with in person. Last time I saw her I refused to speak with her. Long story, but she fucking deserved it. Manipulative cow.

Anyway, here's where I pull out my NJSnobbery and officially declare Ocean County utter slime. Snippet:

DISMISSING A DYING WISH
Freeholders won't pass gay worker's benefits to partner

When lung cancer finally kills Laurel Hester -- and it will, in a matter of months -- she wants to know that her domestic partner, Stacie Andree, won't lose their home in Point Pleasant.

That legacy, however, is in doubt.

Ocean County's freeholders have refused to act on a request from Hester, an investigator for 23 years in the county prosecutor's office, to provide domestic partner benefits for gay and lesbian employees under a state law enacted last year. Without a resolution by the freeholders, her pension benefits cannot go to Andree.
...
The surviving spouse benefit amounts to about $13,000 a year and would be paid from the state pension fund. For Andree, an auto mechanic, the money would "mean the difference in whether or not she can stay in the house," Hester said.

sometimes politicians make me just plain embarrassed about being from nj. just like sometimes politicians make me just plain embarrassed about being an american. don't get me wrong, i value my state and my country, but i don't always feel represented by my representatives. hopefully between now and next november, some more viable options will emerge. it would be great if laurel and andree could last that long.

That is such a sad situation that I hear about almost weekly...I don't know what gives these nasty-ass politicians the right to reward love with unequal rights and discrimination.

You're what my good Jersey City friend refers to as a "guidette", aren't you, Mox?

Gotta love North Jersey.

Aren't you from Morristown? My friend Anushka's family moved from the Bay Area to Morristown in the mid-eighties.

Wow! That's interesting!

Nicho - I am NOT a guidette ;p I never had big hair - EVER - I never wore Cavariccis - EVER - and I've never been in an IROC - EVER! My name is neither Gina, nor Toni. I may have worn a large, white belt once, in the 80s, but it was the style at the time.

Bobo - I went to Morristown High - name doesn't ring a bell, did she go there? I graduated in 92. You want to see some big hair? My class was the last to have it.

Is there a difference between Morristown and Morris Township? I think she lived in Morris Township. I dunno. She probably graduated in 88.

She was like a mod/new wave chick.

That was, undeniably, the best answer possible.

Moxie Grrrl:

I've never been to New Jersey so I have a question: Where is Asbury Park and where is Thunder Road? Nobody posted mentioning these places but I've heard of them and was wondering what part of the state they're in and what's the locale like there? And is Thunder Road a place for "unofficial" drag racing or is that just my imagination? Also, why is Jersey called "the Garden State"? Just curious.

Hey Lil Bobo,
I'm from the same area as Moxie and I've got a few years on her.
Did your friend Anushka have a last name starting with "P"? Was her family originally from Armenia?
There cannot have been that many Anushkas around here.

Ok, I'm curious as to the term freeholder.
This term used to apply (like, 150 yrs ago) to any land owning male but I'm pretty sure NJ doesn't use the term that way.
Are they elected officials?

I have a friend who moved to NJ and was shocked to learn his truck was illegal there. It was an 04 dodge four wheel drive with a modest lift kit and 33" tires.
He had sunk at least $30k into the brand new truck right before moving there from VA. One of my good friends did the +$10k custom paint job on it.

Apparently NJ has some law that everything has to be stock on his truck. it must have been a serious law, because he moved back here, giving up a $100k a yr job rather than give up his truck.

he tells everyone NJ is the garden state because filling up the bed with dirt and planting tomatos was all his truck was good for there. lmao

To destroy fascism & sans-culotte,
Perhaps i can help with your NJ questions. (Not to step on any Moxie-toes, but she IS a VERY busy superhero).

Asbury Park is a town on the NJ shore ("down the shore" to all who don't live there). It's about halfway down the length of the state, between Red Bank and Point Pleasant. The town was once a popular resort but it is now known mostly for its crime, corruption and a long string of very poor municipal investments.
Thunder Road exists only in Springsteen fantasy-NJ. The Boss took the title for his song from a late fifties movie. The name has since been used for drag racing strips (legal and street) around the country.
No one seems to know why NJ is called the Garden State but most guesses hinge on the fact that the state was home to most of the farms that provided produce to NYC and Philly.
Freeholders in NJ are county-level elected officals. Counties can have up to nine freeholders and they are usually part-time positions. Roughly equivalent to a county board in the rest of the country.
Whew! Hope that helps.
Oh, and sans, nothing that the NJ-DMV does would surprise me. They are some draconian mofos.

New Jersey is called the Garden State because at one time, this was a largely agricultural state (yes, known for growing amaxzing tomatoes).

Yes, we have a Board of Chosen Freeholders - usually get the same guys elected over and over again. Many have buildings around the county named after them.

PS: I didn't know that bit about Thunder Road - not a massive Springsteen fan. But yeah, Asbury Park is a shore town. And rAsp is right - it's not "at the shore" it's "down the shore", as in "We're going down the shore later."

Thanks Moxie Grrrl and Rasp. I'm not a big Springsteen fan either, I just thought "Thunder Road" was a real road. My bad.

an aside: several years ago, a NY metro area radio station, WPLJ, did a parody song called "jersey girl", sung to the tune of "barbie girl" by aqua. while moxie doesn't fit the description (er....entirely... er...any more...ok...not at all...), it's a lot of fun, and anyone who's lived in nj knows someone who matches the description. i tried to find a link to the song, but all i found was the lyrics:

Guy: Hey ya Tiffany..
Girl: Hey Rocco
Guy: You wanna go down the shore or what?
Girl: Friggin 'a.
I'm a Jersey girl, in a Jersey world.
I look fantastic, my pants are plastic.
Watch my bootie shake, crankin' up Whitesnake,
I love Jean Claude Van Damme and my Trans-Am.
Guy: Get your token in Hoboken
Girl: I get on the train, it's a major pain.
Guys are starin', at my friend Karen.
Our boobies are fake, we love Ricki Lake.
We think she's way cool, at our high school.
I'm a blonde, single girl, but was born a brunette,
all the guys say I look just like Farrah.
Guy: You're a babe, you're a fox, Garden State goldilocks, even with that ten pounds of mascara.
Girl: Dish the dirt, love to flirt, in my leather mini-skirt.
I'm a Jersey girl, in a Jersey world.
I have dark roots, I wear white boots.
Tattoo on my back, like to dress in black.
I feel peachy, in my Cavaricci's.
Guy: Shake your whiney tiny hiney, ah ah ah
Keep your butt firm, get a home perm
Date your jewelers, drink wine coolers
Non-stop shoppin', beer cans poppin'
Girl: I go shoppin' at Zales, for my fake fingernails, got a ring in my nose and my belly.
Guy: Jersey chick, drives a stick, combs her hair with a pick.
Works at the Bloomfield Avenue Deli.
Girl: You can look, but don't touch, till you put a ring on my finger.
Take a glance, at my pants, you won't get there unless you're Kip Winger.
I'm a Jersey girl, in a Jersey world.
I can't go wrong, in my butt thong.
Make my weekend plans, down at Houlihans.
my boyfriend Guido, wears a Speedo.
Hit the tanning bed, till my skin turns red.
I'm a lobster, wanna date a mobster.
Scrunchie in my hair, playin' truth or dare.
I'm so pretty, I hate New York City.
Guy: Loves hairy chests and leather vests...yes, yes, yes
Take her picture, make her richer
Likes to cake-up, all her make-up
orders take-out, likes to make-out
Girl: (spoken) I am so trashed right now.
Guy: (spoken) Excellent!
Girl: (spoken) Can you really get me in a movie?

I miss WinMX too. By the way, what part of Jersey are "the Sopranos" supposed to be from in that show? And was it filmed on location?

November 30, 2005 4:54 PM
Blogger m said...

destroy fascism, the sopranos are from north caldwell, a wealthy town in essex county. (the county seat of essex county is newark.) the show is filmed all over north jersey. they've been to local stores, diners, car dealerships, catering halls, parks, etc. they even filmed in a condo development right across the street from my uncle's condo.

HOWEVER, that life is foreign to most jersey girls. while that stereotypical northeastern NJ "jersey girl" fits right into the world of the sopranos, it is not representative of new jerseyans as a whole. i live in an area where there are still at least 3 or 4 farms within a 20-minute drive. ok, so there are also 3 or 4 malls that are within a 20-minute drive, but you know what i mean. there are entire counties, including hunterdon and warren, which are ENTIRELY middle america, with lots of farms, lakes, and small towns, with not a petroleum refinery in sight.

Oh, thanks M. One more question: What is the "Jersey Devil" [not the hockey team]? I've heard it is some kind of urban legend from New Jersey, but beyond that I have no details.

The Jersey Devil is a critter that's supposed to live in the Pine Barrens. Some theories have it as a feral child, while others speculate it's an actual devil-like creature.

This website looks to have a nice little history of it:

Whoa, that's bizarre. I noticed at one point the article mentioned Great Egg Harbor and Little Egg Harbor which I remembered reading about in "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of my favorite books. The book centered around that area of N.J. of the two 'Egg' harbors. Interesting. One of the drawings in the article showed it with what they said was a horse's head but to me it appeared to be more like a camel's head. Strange. Where I live there's an urban legend [with considerably less "sightings" than the Jersey Devil one] about a supposed "Goat Man" who as the legend goes is "half man, half goat" and some have it that the "Goat Man" abducts children, others say he just frightens people. Either way I think it's fantasy, but interesting nonetheless. There's also a local legend about the "Crybaby Bridge" regarding a woman who supposedly threw her baby off a bridge and it died, then every year on the anniversary of its death, late at night, you can [the legend claims] "hear the baby crying". Spooky.

have you ever seen the weird series of books? weird NJ, weird US, weird WI, etc.? well weird NJ was first, and it's chock-full of spooky things. if there isn't one for your state, try the NJ one. it's pretty cool, and may answer some more questions about the garden state.
