Texas Overpaid Miers for Small Bit of Land
By ten times the worth of the land. Must be nice to have friends in high places.
Texas officials paid Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers' family more than $100,000 for a small piece of land in 2000 — 10 times the land's worth — despite the state's objections to the way the price was determined, Knight Ridder Newspapers reported Saturday.
The three-member committee that determined the price included Peggy Lundy, a friend of Miers, and property-rights activist Cathie Adams, Knight Ridder reported. They were appointed to the panel by state District Judge David Evans, who had received at least $5,000 in campaign contributions from Miers' law firm.

Besides being a poor article based on facts, something is seriously wrong with the math.
It does not state the square footage of the parcel sold.
However, if:
1 Acre= 43,560 SQFT
.30 Per SQFT= $ 217,800.00
5.00 Per SQFT= $ 13,068.00
Regardless, that the calculations lacks all the necessary components.
Based on the pricing referred in the article; the Ratio’s DO NOT ADD UP proportionately.
Too bad the Writer did not do the math first. before making the 10 times claim.
In fact, the writer is anonymous.
Duh had it backwards
.30=$ 13,068.00
5.00=$ 217,800.00
You're right, Iggy . . . the "10 times" isn't correct. The state paid more than 16 times the value of the value. Guess that makes it all better, eh?

Once again, Iggy sticks his foot deep inn his mouth...must be a madochist...course, he cant get anyoneone to go to his blog, which has a TOTAL OF 3 POSTS on it, so he comes here to take his beatings.
The authors of the article are Jack Douglas and Stephen Henderson. So, they aren't "anonymous" as claimed by iggy dude.
Also, the $5 amount was a recommendation by the panel. It was not the amount that was ultimately paid to the Meirs family. So iggy dude's math game is meaningless.
I could see that it exceded 10 times.
Did not put my foot in my mouth, The storie lacks facts to back it up. I don't ask anybody to visit my blog is only a beta site.
It's sad that people hate republicans and Bush so bad. They think that the a democratic president will be any different. The SENATE has all the power.
They are “Republicrats” and “Demopublicans”.
Iggy dude has a point. The Congress is a problem, which is why we should all be anti-incumbent this coming 2006. A complete shift of Congress is necessary. Where ever there is a seat up for election, do a find and replace - vote for someone new and oust the old. New folks can't be much worse, but at least the government would get the message.
As to the whole realestate boondoggle, I'm not altogether sure why the state would pay her for her property in the first place. Can anyone help me understand why we should be angry or outraged about this partucular event?
Windspike, rather than vote out every incumbent why don't you try reading their voting record and, perhaps, some of their speeches, and make an informed decision? I know that would be work and all but, hey, that's what is required in a democratic republic.
We should be outraged about Mier's overpayment because 1)That was taxpayer money that was given away to her due to cronyism. 2)She was ordered to pay back 26 or 28 thousand dollars of the original payment. She has yet to do that. 3)She is up for a Supreme Court nomination yet numbers 1 and 2 don't speak well for her integrity...at all.
Kit:
You really can't go off the voting records.
The votes are stacked everybody knows who's going to vote which way.
As long as I know the bill will pass or fail. I can vote to keep the majority happy. (Since I know in advance the outcome, I can vote what's makes me look best)
Look at Alaska, how did that dude EVER get money for a bridge, A highway named after him, and he kicked 500,000 to Alaska Air to paint a Jet like a fish?
It was “Republicrats” and “Demopublicans”.
Our Taxes, their pork!
Voting records, speeches, etcetera have a little more heft to them then just stupidly-lazy "throw the bumbs out" nothingness, don't you think? I mean, come on. Try at least to know what the hell you are talking about. Okay?
The only thing that makes this news is the fact that she hasn't paid back the money she was ordered to pay. Anyone would take the money and run if they were offered more than what the item was worth and everybody looks for "connections" they can use to make more money or further their careers.
The most important point here is the lack of understanding, comprehension, and ability to reason infecting the large number of people like Iggy that makes it possible for bald faced liars to be elected to power.
Ditto.
Hey JUJU, when you posted the comment about iggi's site, there were at least 10 things up, so thanks for assuming the content. And iggi, perhaps the link that I put up on your site for this story will make some more sense to you, since you're all confused and shit drinking that cruiseliner alcohol. Support the site, mang! Don't give into this "beta-apologetic" crap, you're a pro, literally!
I think nine posts make you "pro" technically. So, yeah, right on.

Kitt,
In D.C. only concrete actions account for strong messages. When your government fails to help you after a hurricane, it hurts.
When the voters speak, particularly those not privy to large corprate pools of dollars to pay well shod lobyists to speak for them, it's usually by voting. Unfortunately, particularly with this administration, they take a false majority and parley that into a "mandate from the people." And, the democrats are simply folding over - not a real spine among them. I would be happy to examine the record of anyone you suggest might be in posession of such a spine, but I think we may need to look for help outside the beltway to fix what's wrong with our system. It stinks from the inside out and the shit rains on the constituents.
In the end, a wholesale find and replace would be a strong message. Even better would be replacing all incumbants with strong, liberal and fiscally smart thinkers. I know they are hard to find, but they are out there - they have yet to present themselves.
Anwyay, there may be one or two that need to stick around, but just by the fact that they are in there suggest that they like the system the way it is. The rot needs to be cleaned from the very dirty core, all the way to the nasty, failing and falling apart fringes. Like the mob, it's time for us to call in the governmental cleaners as there is nary a clean hand in this bloody mess.
Windspike,
Just one person, Ralph Nader, wasn't able to garner more than a minicule percentage of the vote. Your scenario of replacing everybody is unworkable and unecessary and it aint' gonna happen. The 500 plus people you want to replace will need to be replaced with - guess what - 500 plus people. I stress the word 'people'. How you are going to know what you have going in, not to mention after the new 500 plus get a whiff of power, is beyond me.
Waste your time with that pipedream if you like. I'll continue to do my homework and work with what we have to work with. There are some people out of the 500 plus in the congress who are working for America's benefit. There are some who aren't. Such are the realities of life.
