Cheney Aide Said to Flip as Rumors of Cheney Resignation Fly
They say he was told in recent weeks that he could face imminent indictment for his role in leaking Plame-Wilson’s name to reporters unless he cooperated with the investigation. Others close to the probe say that if Hannah is cooperating with the special prosecutor then he was likely going to be charged as a co-conspirator and may have cut a deal.
Oddly enough, rumors started flying that Dick Cheney would resign and the next person in line in good ol' Shoe Shoppin' Condi.
Sparked by today's Washington Post story that suggests Vice President Cheney's office is involved in the Plame-CIA spy link investigation, government officials and advisers passed around rumors that the vice president might step aside and that President Bush would elevate Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
"It's certainly an interesting but I still think highly doubtful scenario," said a Bush insider. "And if that should happen," added the official, "there will undoubtedly be those who believe the whole thing was orchestrated – another brilliant Machiavellian move by the VP."
Said another Bush associate of the rumor, "Yes. This is not good." The rumor spread so fast that some Republicans by late morning were already drawing up reasons why Rice couldn't get the job or run for president in 2008.
Well, I can certainly see someone more peripheral from the core players turning on the foul core members. Someone probably reminded him that he was a small fish in a big pond and he'd be really cute as a prison bride.
As for the rumors about Dick, well, it wouldn't be a big shock if he DID resign. It's pretty obvious his body is collapsing due to the weight of the black heart residing in his chest.

Well, this solves the problem of what being faced with Cheney as president when we Impeach Bush.
Man this is sick. Let me run through the list.
-Gov. Taft is a criminal.
-Tom Delay charged.
-Bill Frist investment scandal.
-Karl Rove leaks.
-James Dobson being James Dobson.
-VP Cheney in trouble.
-Republicans scrambling to grasp the situation and jumping ship.
-Bush's social security plan all but killed.
-Bush didn't get all his judicial nominees.
This is all madness, sheer madness. I mean, come on, republicans drooled at Clinton's impeachment and thrown red meat with Rep. Jim Trafficant. Now, the republicans find themselves on the business end of their own creation and they cry foul. They can dish it out but they can't take it. Dobson should be able to characterize this behavior, being a child psycologist, as a temper tantrum. By the way, what is up with clergy, children, and their hatred of porn? That's just sick.
And all I ever did was refuse to drink the Kool Aid.
Deep, dark, firery pits of hell heart, me thinks. Sunk way low, I saw a cartoon this AM where a political figure was walking the march to the pits of hell muttering "I know why I am in this pickle, fucking media." Cheney has a lot further low to go beyond just resigning.
I know some people who would shit their pants if there ever was a black v-p. It'd be funny.
How about Colin Powell for VP? He's black and ashamed of what he did and smart enough not to run for pres in '08. They probably agree to him.
I'm glad you didn't fall into the black sleep of the calima, Moxie.
Is that a Silmarillian reference, Duck?
Isn't this premature?
I did not see anything on DrudgeReport yet.
Still long way to go if there is anything.
"I don't recall" goes a long way in court.
Maybe this was the plan all along, Cheney step down in last two years and set Condi up to run against the Hillary in 2008
So many rumors flying around. What is true, what is a distraction?
I got bored with it after awhile, and became curious about the guy that started all this shit, Robert Novak. I wanted an update on him, and yahooed his name.
I hit a few sites, and suddenly I got a notice that I had spyware in my laptop, and was requested to download software to counteract it. Is this some sort of scam, from less secure sites? Has anyone else had this problem. I had to pull the plug on my sytem to get rid of it.
I hadn't come across that problem, Waff - sounds serious. Pooter back to happy now?
Dunno which programs you use, but I use PestPatrol, AdAware and SpyBot. I find the triple threat takes care of the majority of the problems.
Color me cynical buuuuttttt.... this might answer my previously asked question about who the Republicans will run to replace Bush.... they made sure Powell, Bloomberg and Whitman were out of the way (to mention just a few); Dick is out on account of his bad ticker (never mind the possibility of indictment); I don't think Rove actually wants to be Prez, he's doing just dandy pulling the strings (besides, who would vote for "poo-flower" or whatever the hell Bush calls him).....
But put Condi Rice in as Veep, and TA DUM! You have a) a black b) woman c) with international relations experience (such as it is) and d) with administrative experience (even if she is only veep for a year) ... not to mention e) way WAY WAAAAAAY loyal, and says/does what she's told.
And the shoe thing? Well... no one remembers Imelda Marcos anymore anyway, right?
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. I studied anthropology in college.
Oooh, good reference - I even asked Kid Bastard, the encyclopedia of pop culture references and he didn't get it either.
Cover your heart Indy! COVER YOUR HEART!
I have my moments.
I caught "Summer Lovers" a sentimental favorite on late night Cinemax lately (which incidentally is how I saw it for the first time)
The line that still resonates:
"Now he covers his balls and jumps off the cliff"
That what we need to do...
President Condi?
Well, she's no Gerald Ford...
Rice is too much a part of the scandal and she may be indicted. If not, the senate would never confirm her. It would be one of the Repub senators or congressmen who doesn't have his tit in the wringer. McCain would be a good pick for them.
The bottom line is that Big Dick is sick. It is of my opinion that Cheney had a heart transplant last year when he disappeared for about 6 months. Then he had two, possibly three recent visits to the hospital with TWO surgeries supposedly for one of his knees. I say they are floating the idea of Cheney taking the fall for the team by retiring. This will do nothing as he, Rove, and Libby will still be running things. It's called "privatization" and you can bet their salaries will be triple at least.
(The) Condeleeza Rice for Prez? Shades of Exxon Valdez! It's certainly gives new meaning to spreading oil on troubled waters: A clueless Tanker in tumultuous seas. With Hazelwood at the helm, no doubt.
Re computer protection: Moxie, I agree, AdAware and Spybot are both excellent (and can replace Pest Control)- and both are free. Free also is Zone Alarm, a firewall that's saved my bacon more times than I can count. Using Mozilla (tons of neat add-ins and extensions available - again, all free) instead of IE goes a long way towards avoiding viruses targeting Microsoft products (it also helps if your ISP provides virus scanning of e-mail.)
Three rules that should be followed by 'net users, to avoid trouble:
Never open an attachment to an e-mail, unless you know the sender.
Never click on pop-ups offering free anything. (Google the site first.)
When signing petitions, etc., always check the privacy policy of the site involved before offering private or personal information.
Sidebar: To gain access to sites that require you fill out a "registration" form asking for personal information before you can secure a needed user name and password, key the site's url into BugMeNot.com. BMN will then supply you with fictitious forms of both, which work quite well most of the time without having to surrender personal information.
gaia,
Good advice on avoiding malware, but you forgot to add turning on Automatic Updates. Some spy/malware uses microsoft's many vulnerabilities to spread.
Also, free software frequently had spyware attached. The ones you mentioned are clean, but others are definitely not. Games, "download accelerators", various utilities, even some "spyware removal" tools are nothing more than a spyware delivery system. Always research anything you put on your computer.
I do have to disagree with part of you Valdez comments. Exxon always loves it when someone blames the "drunken skipper". It keeps people for blaming them for creating the unsafe conditions that actually caused the accident.
Ever since the 2004 elections when Cheney suddenly disappeared from public view I wondered if the Grand Plan was for him to resign "for health reasons," so that a new Veep could be put in place, a marvelous springboard to the 2008 elections.
Perhaps that was the original plan, but a real crisis/scandal may force the issue. And who else in Dubya's conservative universe is viable? Not Frist. He's tainted by both the SEC probe and his Schiavo-pandering. Brownback's WAY too much of a wingnut to be considered. McCain? Too liberal (!) -- despite kissing up to the man who slimed him in S.C. in 2000.
Condi is IT. The best we can hope for is that the middle-of-the-road swing voters have had a bellyfull of G.O.P "governing."
All. Thanks for all the great advice on protection from malware!
Sorry to detract from the discussin.
There is an extremely interesting article on the Plame affair, written from an intelligence analyst's perspective here:

They're pissed.

That's exactly what I implied by the conclusion of my point. I tied Rice to the Exxon tanker at one time named after her [notice the (The)]- a ship of the same insanely fragile construction as the Valdez and operated under many of the same conditions - and implied that any Rice presidency, instead of restoring peace, is likely to rupture and poison the situation even more.
And, of course, incompetents of this caliber ~always~ make it a point to have an important underling on which to place`blame, hence the snark about Hazelwood.
Oh... forgot to mention... should Condi Rice become Veep, the Republicans get to see how folks react to a black republican woman vice prez, without actually having to RUN her. It's "checking" in Texas Hold'em... a free peek at the cards while you decide what to do. If she's a bust, then she's outta there in '08 (but the GOP still gets to have been responsible for the first black woman Vice-P); if the sky doesn't fall, it's all the way in '08!
Ya know, it bugs me more that the poker = government metaphor is accurate, than the fact that I made it at all. Tomorrow: my life as a Poker Chip. Sorry guys, I'm only worth $5.
Sorry, gaia. Knee jerk reaction. I know too many people who use Hazlewood without realizing just how much they are giving Exxon a free ride.
