Bush Wants Martial Law in Event of Avian Flu Outbreak

Okee dokee, this should get everyone on all sides of all issues something to raise their eyebrows over. Excerpt:

The president has already indicated he wants to give the armed forces the lead responsibility for conducting search-and-rescue operations and sending in supplies after massive natural disasters and terrorist attacks — a notion that could require a change in law and that even some in the Pentagon have reacted to skeptically. The idea raised the startling-to-some image of soldiers cordoning off communities hit by disease.

"The president ought to have all ... assets on the table to be able to deal with something this significant," Bush said during a 55 minute question-and-answer session with reporters in the sun-splashed Rose Garden.

I see. And just where are we getting all these armed forces? And when do we start calling our friends "comrades"?

We're playing with fire here. I'm surprised more people don't remember this event. Of course there was a similar measure in place that would have delayed the 2004 elections in the event of a terrorist attack...I'm not sure what to think anymore.

Maybe GW is hitting the bottle again.
Bad PR to do this; why even bring it up such a plan?
If people start dropping like flies and LOCAL Government needs help, then call in the troops as a last resort.
Maybe he's covering his ass.

Well, I guess that's easier than doing actual work, like trying to help prevent an outbreak.

It's always a cause for concern when this administration states that "all options are on the table".

Holy mother of holy holiness, I really cannot believe anyone ever chose to put such a brick-faced poltroon in charge of their country. I weep for humanity.

DID Everybody know that the ex head of the KGB and the East German Secret Police are working for homeland security?
check the link:

They are working on the National ID/GPS tracking system that every American must have or be arrested (wish I were making this up). The legislation is already enacted. The government will just have to flip a switch, and they;; know where you are at any moment.

Then, secret plans to get EVEN MORE police powers:

"There's an important story developing tonight at the Justice Department. The non-partisan Center for Public Integrity obtained a closely-guarded document that shows plans for a sweeping expansion of the government's police powers.
Until now, few people outside of the department, not even members of key congressional committees have seen this draft legislation. It could lead to increased surveillance and greater secrecy - all in the name of the war on terror. It raises questions about how we balance liberty and security - the rights of individuals versus the rule of law.

Bill Moyers talks to Chuck Lewis about the significance of the Domestic Security Enhancement Act of 2003 and how it would affect civil liberties.

http://www.pbs.org/now/politics/lewis.html

So, we've already establishe that we can detain you for any reason forever

http://tinyurl.com/8z5js

and that we can search your house, library card, anything at will

http://tinyurl.com/9ll6l

now all the only piece of the puzzle that is standing between us stepping in and arresting mass amounts of people at will (after all, we know where you are at all times),
is...the revocation of the Posse Comitatus Act.

One last thought: what if, not saying this is true but what if, the Feds withheld stuff from NOLA during Katrina on purpose, so people would BEG for the military to come in. Then they could say "SEE, its that darned Posse Comitatus act, thats the real problem, soons we get ri of that, we'll be OK" just a thought

on last point:
Watch this film, and then tell me who we soul fear more, a dried up rich boy terrorst with kidney problems in a goat cave in Afghanistan or these guys

Take out the Nazi playbook and lay it side by side with the past five years of this administration and, if you have an open mind, you will see where we are headed.

I honestly don't know what's scarier . . . the fact that a President of the US would try to implement such measures, or the fact that so many people in the US still support a President who would do so.

Excuse the fuck outta me, but what the hell are soldiers gonna do about the flu? Point their little guns at the nearest chicken and say, ‘Drop those infected feathers, boys - it’s off to Perdue for you!” Don’t buy into the premise. The only reason to have troops is to use them violently. Should this occur, should Posse Comitatus be either commuted or suspended – we will have worse trouble than Tippi Hedren did with a few pissed off seagulls! Don’t forget folks, Bush has three more years left on his contract. Three fucking years! Just think of the damage! God – it boggles the mind.

It makes total sense to use force to quarantine infected regions. Typically people panic in epidemics and try to evacuate; spreading the disease further.
What I don't get, however, is why the military? Why not the National Guard or someone--oh, yeah, the are all in Iraq.

I say, "Bring it on!" And after a few decades when we all finally recover from Bush's policies we can start it all again. Ain't politics and stupid people just grand?

Personally, I like the idea. The shrub commits the military to stopping avian flu, liberals across the country stage a sick-in, and presto, the troops are out of Iraq.

Anyone know the specific symptoms to fake?

William - except it's really easy to say "Hey, I can't leave the office while the US is under martial law - people need me! And I have the guns to back it up. No election this year"

Be careful what you ask for.

Though you and I come from opposite ends of the political spectrum, I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of Bush's press to give the military power over citizens of the United States.

I urge all Americans in the strongest voice I can render that they NOT consider any form of action in the direction of eliminating the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878. Though I personally feel safe enough under President Bush's leadership, future Presidents could use such power to tyrannical purposes. Every tyrannical government and every dictatorship in the history of civilization has taken this first step on the road to tyranny. We must not follow in the footsteps of such doomed and wicked nations. America could become the very type of evil empire so many of our Presidents have worked so tirelessly to remove from the face of the earth.

Unfortunately, though President Bush is a man of principle, he often acts as an outcome based thinker, having the view that the end result justifies the means used to get there. In these troubled times, we have no choice but to be people that make decisions based upon principles rather than current circumstances, and to take the long view of the consequences of today's decisions. We must not abandon freedom for the sake of security. We must not allow fear to dictate our decisions, nor allow the threat of death to overpower the sanctity of liberty.

I'm glad I found your blog and do agree with your posting. I was afraid I was the only one concerned about this huge issue. Why isn't the media discussing this? Why isn't EVERYONE discussing this?
