$15K Bonus to Re-Listers Gone Bye-Bye

So I have this buddy - a National Guard - who's in Iraq. For some insane reason, he decided to re-up (presumably because his tail is a bit farther from the frontlines than many, or he really is insane).

And now I read this:

When a bonus isn’t a bonus

The Pentagon has reneged on its offer to pay a $15,000 bonus to members of the National Guard and Army Reserve who agree to extend their enlistments by six years, according to Sen. Patty Murray (D-Seattle).

The bonuses were offered in January to Active Guard and Reserve and military technician soldiers who were serving overseas. In April, the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs ordered the bonuses stopped, Murray said.

“This is outrageous,” the senator said in a telephone interview. “It makes me angry that this administration has broken another promise to our troops.”

A Pentagon spokeswoman, Lt. Col. Ellen Krenke, confirmed the bonuses had been canceled, saying they violated Pentagon policies because they duplicated other programs. She said Guard and Reserve members would be eligible for other bonuses.

Krenke said some soldiers had been paid the re-enlistment bonuses, but she was unsure how many or whether the money would have to be repaid. Murray’s office said that as far as it knew, no active Guard or Reserve members had received the bonuses.

I emailed him to see if this affected him. If we're lucky, maybe he'll weigh in.

Lets see here, Republicans support the troops. Support means to hold up. Hold up is a slang term for robbery. See, it all makes sense.

Simply discontinuing the offer, while stupid, is fine. It will likely affect re-ups, which will put even more pressure on recruitment efforts, but if they want to discontinue offering a re-up benefit, that's their business.

However, renegging on paying those who were already PROMISED the payment, and even (potentially) forcing those who received it to pay it back is completely outrageous. What they are, in effect, doing is CHARGING these men & women to put themselves in harm's way.

Y'know, since the Pentagon isn't upholding its end of a SIGNED CONTRACT, I'd say that releases all those who re-upped from their end of it as well.

Holy crap! You know how the Pentagon is going to get around not letting those people out of their extended enlistments? They're going to say something to the effect of "the bonus shouldn't have been your only reason for re-enlisting." Or if not that, they'll find a way to get around it.

Damn...that's just slimy. I'm at a loss for words...

BTW, Moxie, didn't get to comment on the proper thread back there, but congrats on almost finishing up your schooling! Good luck with everything! :)
