Evacuation Going Badly in TX

Amid the dead-stop traffic jams where people reported going as far as 100 yards in an hour and exploding buses, the feds are promising to bring fuel to stranded evacuees who's cars have simply run out of gas from sitting and running for so long.

The only good news appears to be that Rita's lost a bit of steam and has been downgraded from the Super Mega Crazy Catagory 5 hurricane it was to the Super Mega Crazy Catagory 4 hurricane it now is, and Houston and Galveston might not get the direct hit.

So what exactly have officials learned from Katrina? There was a whole lot of talk about learning lessons, and I may be missing something, but having thousands of people stuck in their little tin boxes unable to go anywhere when 140 mile an hour wind and rain comes doesn't sound like a good situation.

*waiting for all the blame to pour forth on the state and local officials*

You know, since there's people left behind and people stuck on inadequate roads.

Oh but wait...aren't all the state and local officials Republican? Nevermind!

(And, FWIW, I'm NOT hoping that anyone dies in this horrible mess. I just think that it's ironic that there are evacuation problems on both sides of the aisle.)

I'm just now (9/27) getting a chance to see any internet anything, so I'm getting caught up on my Moxiegrrl reading. I live in Houston, and just so you know, Houston's mayor, Bill White, is a Democrat. The city government has a mixture of Dems and Repubs, while state gov has a majority of Repubs.

The whole thing has been insane. I almost evacuated, and am very glad I didn't, now that a Cat. 5 hasn't blown through here. If a Cat. 5 or 4 had, however, I know that no matter where you were, it would have been bad. It's the scariest experience I've ever been through here, having only been in Houston since 1991. In the end, I don't think anyone could have done much better, given all of the circumstances that converged.

What is absolutely true for me is that my instinct to move to the Northwestern part of the country (Portland, OR if possible) is absolutely "on the nosey!" I and my happy little family unit are outta here as soon as we can make it happen, for so many good reasons I won't take up the space to list them here! There are some truly wonderful people here, a small but vibrant peace community, and some unique treasures, but I still know I need to leave. After this past month or so, I don't see any logic in living here.

Anyone know of any jobs in Portland? ;-)
