YEP, We're SAFE!

Illegal immigrants accessed nuclear weapons facility
But Department of Energy report says nothing was compromised

Sixteen illegal immigrants gained access last year to one of the most sensitive weapons sites in the country, according to a report issued Monday by the Department of Energy's inspector general.

The inspector general's investigation found the illegal immigrants were construction workers on jobs at the Y-12 National Security Complex near Knoxville, Tennessee.

The workers used "false documents" and "gained access to the ... site on multiple occasions," the report said...

"This situation represented a potentially serious access control and security problem," the report said.

Yeah, no shit, Sherlock. See, this is where using Homeland Security to make sure this kind of thing doesn't happen would be a good idea. Or - get this! - the NATIONAL GUARD. Because I think Nukular Facilitillies might be a good thing to protect against terrorism. But hey, I'm just a registered voter. Not like I'm one of them smart politicians or anything.

Yes, let's dick around in a country that has nothing to do with the terrorism that occurred on US soil almost 4 years ago. That makes LOADS of sense. Right.

Moxie,
Of course things like this will happen.
Humans are fallible.
For the most part I am simply amazed and thankful that we have made it this far without another attack.
We are truly vulnerable beyond one’s imagination, just geographic’s alone, do you know how many miles of roads, waterways, harbors, bridges, power plants chemical plants?
I work with computers. I will not mention all of the high tech ways we could be hit as well.
I can think of some real scary scenarios.
As far as Iraq goes, besides the 20 some million freed, It is not as bad as portrayed by our news.Remember Nes is $$$$$ too!
A majority of Iraqis do not hate us. It would not be possible for us control that massive population against their will..
It appears that terrorist have been fleeing to Iran.
Iran may be the real target. Iran has nukes. We don’t know the big picture.
If you ever played the game of risk it not simple, a lot of deals and logistics besides manpower.
The average age of an Iraq males is 19.7(8 million) We need them as allies.
We have had no more attacks, we have to trust each other and trust our leaders too.
This is important for any success. I think Oliver North explains this perfectly in one page article posted this week.

Our armed forces are scattered all over the globe while at home our borders are left open and unguarded. We actual citizens are supposed to be extra careful about what we do and say, while any creep from anywhere can walk easily among us. Wild, isn't it?

Anthrax in the mail

Tell me again, did they ever resolve that?

Ok, I don't feel so well. I might actually have succumbed to brain fever, but I agree with some of what Monsieur Richards wrote(edit out the comments regarding Iraq, Iran and, good grief, Ollie North).

However, our resources would be better focused internally than externally, no? And what about Homeland Security funding? Maybe their resources should be focused at locations that are vulnerable and high risk, not East Bumblef***, Maine.

BTW, what was the nationality of the illegal workers? Cause ya' gotta watch out for those crazy Guatamalans!

John,
I work with computers too, and one thing I've learned is that the hardest part of becoming secure is actually making a commitment to do so. People will procrastinate and complain about costs until forced to change, then when an attack forces it, find out it was cheaper and easier than they thought.

You’re right. There are some scary scenarios out there. Between a “head in the sand” approach, and “politics as usual”, we aren’t dealing with them. The republicans are in control now, so they need to do something about it. Remember “United we stand, divided we fall”? Our president needs to become the uniter he said he would five years ago. Screaming “my way or the highway” is not uniting.

On Iraq and Iran, you say Iraq is getting better. That’s nothing but a republican talking point. If it’s “not as bad as portrayed”, why isn’t it getting better? Attacks against US and Iraqi security forces are still common, and attacks against insurgents are recruiting more insurgents. The Iraqi’s who don’t hate us now, will after we harass, torture, or kill a relative. Yes, we do need them as allies, but you don’t make new friends by kicking someone in the balls!

Iran is another a republican talking point. Our leaders who claim “moral values” want a war there too. Your line is propaganda designed to prepare Americans for that attack.

I have played Risk. Allies are important, and we are isolated, thanks to cowboy diplomacy. Logistics is important, and we are overextended due to ideology driven optimism. We’ve made a push and failed. Now it’s time to pull back and start building again. In risk, if you don’t, someone else rolls you up.

Finally, on terrorist attacks, the time between the first and second was about twelve years. It’s been almost four since the second, so I don’t view a lack of attack as success as victory. I view it as opportunity to try to make things better before the next one. I fear we are wasting that opportunity.

I would like to point out the irony in John's comment regarding the new Iran issue and his encouragement to read something written by Oliver North... the same Oliver North that was the chief coordinator of the illegal sale of weapons via intermediaries to Iran. The same guy responsible for the establishment of a covert network used for the purposes of aiding the Contras. The same guy who admitted that he had lied to Congress.

John, I understand that you want what's best for this country, but don't you think that our involvement in the middle east in the last couple of decades has proven that our presense makes things worse? We sell arms to Paul so he can fight off Peter and when Peter begs for help we switch alliances and help him fight off Paul. Instead of trying to secure oil fields, we should be encouraging education in the sciences to start inventing again - come up with alternative fuel sources so we aren't dependent on oil.

But no, we have to spread our troops out all over the world, meanwhile our own country lets any Tom, Dick and Harry weasel into nuclear facilities. We need to become a strong country again, and this whole operation has made us weak and vulnerable. Just look at Bush's polls! Nearly 60% are against operations in Iraq! Recruitment for service is dwindling - they can't get new people without throwing more money at them as incentives.

It's not working, people don't like it, Bush has turned this country into a worldwide joke. Time to change.
