The Pope Was Just A Man

He is not a saint, and I don't understand why people are suggesting he should be made one.

Wasn't he the head honcho in charge of all those pedophiles and did nothing to make the changes desperately needed to stop those horrible child-rapists from hurting more children?

Mother Teresa? Saint if there ever was one. Pope? I'm not on that bandwagon.

BUT, it's not up to me. They give grand titles to everyone nowadays.

Agreed. Much is being made of the Pope's achievements, but I imagine pretty much any half-decent person, given that much power, could achieve similar ends. It is also worth noting that, like his predecessors, he didn't always use his power for good; for example, the effects of his opposition to contraception and abortion can be seen in many impoverished countries with large Catholic populations. But try telling that to a Catholic...

Ya, know, I gotta disagree. He certainly did a hell of a lot for the world. He is credited for ending communism (though that is up to debate), he pushed hard to end poverty, was a great friend to the Jewish people (a first for a Pope), and much more.

I am not a huge, big fan of the Pope, I think priests should be allowed to marry, and that contraception should be OK.

Other then that, I don't see why he should be denied Saint. Though we still have a few years before that will happen.

If he indeed be a saint, there need be more miracles...like, lets have one - world peace? The end of hunger? Fixing our dependency on oil?

I never liked Mother Theresa myself.

She genuinely seemed to like to have poor people to minister too, and opposed birth control as a way to ensure they'd always be there.

I think the pope was inspirational to a lot of people, but I think he is far from sainthood status.

I vote MoxieGrrrl as Saint. Saint Moxie. You make more sense than all those other so-called super heros.

Maybe George W. Bush should run for Saint. He talks to God all the time, doesn't he??

The pope is quite far from sainthood.

Personally, I kind of oppose the whole idea of a pope. While the Vatican dresses up the pope in expensive robes and pomp, millions of people are starving. What makes this one many any more holy than any other good Christian?

I agree that Mother Teresa is more of a saint than the pope.

M,

Ma Theresa was not a saint:
- she opposed any kind of contraception in one the the world's most heavily-populated and poorer regions
- she refused to use antibiotics
- she actually eschewed any kind of modern medicine in favour of, yes, prayer as the sole remedy for tuberculosis.

There are more, but I can't think of them off the top of my head. The poor dear, Mother Theresa was a misdirected woman with some really good PR because of the conditions under which she worked.

Okay everyone stop getting yer panties in a bunch - I am not Catholic or Christian and therefor the idea of saints at all is utterly ridiculous. All I recall about Mother Teresa was that she dedicated her life to helping others, eschewing material wealth. I find that a lot more "saintly" than commanding others to do what you want them to do just by saying so, and maintaining incredible wealth while doing so.

And thanks for the nod, Jimbo, but I would probably be one of the last people they'd pick for sainthood - my site is 57% evil! Plus, I know the phrase that results in 99% evilness ;p

More pope poop...from Slate

A piece in the NYT wonders why so few people have been considering the pope's legacy specifically as leader of the Church Catholic. As it happens, an Op-Ed in the paper answers the call, and it's not pretty:

John Paul II's most lasting legacy to Catholicism will come from the episcopal appointments he made. In order to have been named a bishop, a priest must have been seen to be absolutely opposed to masturbation, premarital sex, birth control (including condoms used to prevent the spread of AIDS), abortion, divorce, homosexual relations, married priests, female priests and any hint of Marxism. It is nearly impossible to find men who subscribe wholeheartedly to this entire catalogue of certitudes; as a result the ranks of the episcopate are filled with mindless sycophants and intellectual incompetents.

He will surely be remembered as one of the few great political figures of our age, a man of physical and moral courage more responsible than any other for bringing down the oppressive, antihuman Communism of Eastern Europe. But he was not a great religious figure. How could he be? He may, in time to come, be credited with destroying his church.

The only one that can appoint someone as a saint is God. Because he is the only one that knows what is in the person's heart, their deeds and thoughts. No one knows what the pope did when he was alone. He could have touched himself or thought about naked and dirty things. So they appoint him pope and for all they know he could have put carrots in his anus. Also it is right to oppose contraception. Just because an area is over populated it doesn't mean we have to kill life. The answer to that is to not have sex every hour. It is funny how people will choose to kill life or babies in a second instead of actually tackling the problem. Irresponsibility. People are so pro-abortion because for some reason they believe 20 minutes of sexual behavior is worth more than the life of a person. Take the Aids virus, it is easy to cure. Don't have sex until you are married and then before you have sex you and your partner get checked out. In a few years Aids would be irradicated. It is a testament to the ignorance of people that they always need something to throw the blame on instead of themselves. Even having a pope at all is ridiculous. People have such little faint that they need to have a physical present in order to worship God, the pope essentially taking the place of God because people have trouble worshipping God as an unseen force. God is inside you and everyone, not just a certain person wearing robes and a stupid hat. That's my 4 cents.
