No School Like the Old School

This time the bullet cold rocked ya
A yellow ribbon instead of a swastika
Nothin' proper about ya propaganda
Fools follow rules when the set commands ya
Said it was blue
When ya blood was read
That's how ya got a bullet blasted through ya head

I give a shout out to the living dead
Who stood and watched as the feds cold centralized
So serene on the screen
You were mesmerised
Cellular phones soundin' a death tone
Corporations cold
Turn ya to stone before ya realise
They load the clip in omnicolour
Said they pack the 9, they fire it at prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha fuckas lost their minds

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high
Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high

Checka, checka, check it out
They load the clip in omnicolour
Said they pack the 9, they fire it at prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha fuckas lost their minds

No escape from the mass mind rape
Play it again jack and then rewind the tape
And then play it again and again and again
Until ya mind is locked in
Believin' all the lies that they're tellin' ya
Buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya
They say jump and ya say how high
Ya brain-dead
Ya gotta fuckin' bullet in ya head

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high
Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high

Ya standin' in line
Believin' the lies
Ya bowin' down to the flag
Ya gotta bullet in ya head

-Bullet In The Head, Rage Against The Machine (1992)

I was fortunate enough to do a phone interview with RATM and Audioslave guitarist Tom Morello in 1993. I was doing the interview for my college newspaper and spent quite a while trying to think of good questions to ask him. Turns out I didn't need to ask him much - he's an incredibly intelligent guy who spoke with eloquence and little prompting. He's also very passionate about politics. He started Axis of Justice and remains politically active. I wish he had a blog.

Well, I posted a comment and then hit the wrong button and everything disappeared.
Too tired to try to repeat it, though I had a creative writing teacher who used to
make any student who turned in a piece that seemed beyond him sit down and re-write
it from memory. I'm too old for that. Basically, I was lost for most of this.
Don't quit being yourself. You got popular for straight talking. tar

tar -

I was just reminding people about a really great band who wrote a song that even though it's 13 years old is still relevant. Was listening to them yesterday and got re-energized. :)

The lyrics alone don't do them justice ;)

Ah, yes. Proves I'm too old. Lyrics removed from the melody loses a lot in translation. Thanks for letting me know you weren't just bouncing off the walls.

tar - you're never too old! My 63-year-old father in law listens to everything from German industrial bands to Marilyn Manson to Tool.

Don't worry, if I truly go insane, I'll let ya know. ;)

Mox,

There are no end to relevant songs to dredge up from the past that still hold water today.

I am going to see if I can dig up an old James Connelly Quote and post it on my blog in the near future. It's a good one and will be too long for just a comment, but good for a post in the near future.
