Potiquette
One day, when my friends and I were sitting around discussing the moral implications of cannabis, we wondered if there was ettiquette that pot smokers followed. After doing much research (having spoken at length with actual smokers and their practices), we came to the conclusion that there is indeed a "code of ethics" that smokers tend to follow. Here is a list of just some of what me and my fellow researchers discovered:
- Smokers tend to form a "circle" (though it may not actually be a "circle proper", it may be a rectangle, trapezoid, etc.), and once the circle is established, a direction is chosen and the smoking implement will always go in that direction.
- If someone is accidentally skipped in the circle, they are allowed TWO hits to make up for the faux pas unless they opted not to smoke in that round.
- Regular smokers will often have a wide variety of smoking implements so that guests may choose styles they enjoy most. For instance, some smokers do not enjoy it unless the pot is smoked through a water "bong" with ice chips to assist in cooling the smoke before it reaches their throats. Others prefer the easily disposable "joint" and still others prefer the simple pipe. There seems to be at least a dozen ways marijuana may be smoked, and having at least a few options is preferrable to good hosts.
- People are asked only twice if they want to smoke ("Want some of this?" and "You sure?"), and if both times the answer is "No thanks", they are not asked again unless it was passed to them by someone so stoned they forgot that person wasn't in the circle.
- Though challenges may be made, it is considered a huge waste of good pot to have a "smoking contest" to see who can last the longest.
- It used to be considered good form to bring a little pot to a house in which it is nown there will be smoking so that no one person is the only host. This may have changed in recent times due to an increase in police activity and the desire to be as discreet as possible. It is still bad form to make one person be the host all the time without contributing monitarily or marijuana-ly.
- If the person next in the circle has had enough, the implement simply goes to the next person until all are satisfied.
- It is considered rude to take multiple hits before passing the implement.
- If a smoker is engaged in conversation and ends up holding the implement without smoking or passing it on, it is commonplace for other smokers to yell out "Hold Boy! Don't bogart that weed!", at which time the holder must forfeit his turn and pass it on with a sheepish look on his face.
- Switching directions is cause for a loss of the next hit for the offender.
- There is something called "Pot Karma" - this is when someone who typically has a stash will give some to those in need, assuring that when they find they are dry, others can come through for them.
- Talking openly using correct terminology on cell phones, house phones or via email is generally frowned upon. Often, people will use code language with each other. Successful discussions regarding complex ideas using code language sometimes results in boastful retellings of the situation at future gatherings..
- Discussing how potent a host's stash is is acceptable. Discussion how potent it is NOT is unacceptable unless the commenting party can produce better weed to "mix in". Leaving a small amount for the host is always good form.
- A person who only brings terrible pot (such that produces no nice feelings and possibly a headache) will eventually be "weeded out" of the social circle (pun intended). Those people are considered cheap and though they may be able to supply pently, it is never worth it to regular smokers.
- Smokers who obtain pot through friends always spend social time with that friend when picking some up. It is rude for someone to swing by, get, and leave without staying for at least an hour and possible sharing a joint.
- Should one smoker leave a particularly fine piece of paraphenalia at another smoker's place, and the piece is not returned in a timely fashion, it is neighborly to put a little "tip" in the bowl for good pot karma..
These are just some of the amazing subculture practices I have found during my research, and I promise to add to the list as more are discovered.
